Last week ended with a big fanfare about the completion of the steam gorilla, and now we begin with the car running out of control. The purpose of this moment is to show the strength of the steam engine against Magma while setting up a bit of comedy. It was a bit weird how they extended it from 2 panels into a full scene. It looks like we can expect more extended scenes this season since they aren’t rushed to cover a lot of chapters before the end of Stone Wars, but why this scene? I think the comedy would have hit better if it stayed short and sweet anyway.
Senku gets soft for a minute about leaving the village, but of course it turns into a stone-hearted reminder not to get sentimental. Senku’s VA (Yuusuke Kobayashi) and Chrome’s VA (Gen Sato) add a lot to their characters. Even though Senku isn’t an emotional character, his VA still does a lot to give him ups and downs that aren’t conveyed through text in the manga, even though the manga came first. Chrome’s bratty, aggressive manner has really come out since he was captured and it makes him stand out the way Chrome’s VA gives him such a wild energy.
How about this moment of Kinro getting excited and even blushing? The idea is that all boys are drawn to mecha-type things and even Kinro can’t resist. We know Kinro likes to quietly imagine himself as a badass warrior, which is another thing boys tend to do. The most excited we’ve seen him before was about his golden spear. Even then, it wasn’t anything like “This is so cool!” like we hear him say in this episode.
As they finally leave Ishigami village, it’s an inspiring moment of them marching and then we follow a swallow flying in the sky. It’s more of a symbolic moment, although it would be the actual swallow that Senku revived, since all swallows were also petrified. What does this moment make you think about, and how does it make you feel about their progress and their mission?
Ginro has had a lot of moments in this season so far. He has had a lot of whiny moments but in this episode he’s more excited and confident having the gorilla tank as protection. It doesn’t take long for his cockiness to get out of hand and may have peaked here, imagining himself saving a helpless Chrome while running over the Tsukasa army. It will be interesting to see how he really acts when that moment of battle actually comes. Will he keep up the attitude as long as he has the tank, even when face to face with Tsukasa?
