Wire Tapping

A scientific concept that was brought up by Minami in the latest chapter, and one that Joel’s watch employed while spying on Brody and his people.

Ever since they got into America, the Kingdom of Science have been wary of Xeno and Co. listening in to their conversations. Considering the other side also has communications technology, it was easy for them to listen in on the Kingdom of Science’s messages. This worry was further elaborated on the entire chase to South America, an issue that Senku countered by creating a Stealth Ship.

Wire tapping is simply a means that allows you to listen in to another party’s conversation, using a device that hacks into their communication systems. For however long the device is present, one will be able to monitor another person’s conversations. The conversation can also be recorded, a strategy that is commonly used by the police in criminal investigations.

Mozu likens the wire tap on Joel’s watch to the earring he had on Treasure Island. At the time, he was using it to communicate with the Kingdom of Science.

Something Ibara caught on to and used to listen in on the Kingdom of Science’s strategy.

Remember how these earrings worked? Senku attached a Rochelle salt to a copper coil.

From when they were making the phone, we learned that Rochelle salts can turn sound into electricity.

Attaching them to a speaker allows for sound to be released. It was the final step that Senku used to complete the cellphone. And, what made the earring fully functional on Treasure Island.

The end product for both of these gadgets was a sound producing mechanism.

How exactly does Joel’s watch work as a wiretap, then? Senku compared the earphone listener on Treasure Island to a Crystal Radio. For a crystal radio to work, it uses a crystal detector in its set up. With the watch as well, there is most probably a crystal in it, which would be pyrite, or a galena one. There would be a copper wire inside as well to complete the set up.

Considering it is not connected directly to a speaker, the crystal itself would simply convert the radio waves in the air into electricity. This electricity is then registered as static, or Morse Code, by the wearer of the watch. Like Xeno using his magnetic nails to create an electric current on the communications line of the Stealth Ship.

Assuming the watch is a quartz watch, quartz is a crystal as well. The quartz crystal has a particular vibration that works well for keeping time. So regardless, the watch is dependent on the crystals inside it for two purposes, wire tapping and keeping the time.
